First Batch Always Jams When Starting Up? You Overlooked This Hidden Issue!

Many food factories have had this trouble: when the carton erecting machine or cartoner is just turned on, the first dozens of cartons always jam frequently. The production rhythm that just got started is disrupted right away. People usually think there’s a problem with the machine or the carton size doesn’t match. They spend a lot of time checking but can’t find the key reason — not only do many waste cartons get produced, but production efficiency is also delayed.
Actually, it’s not a problem with the machine or the cartons. The main issue is that the vacuum in the carton suction system isn’t properly established. After the machine shuts down, some air remains in the vacuum pump. When you start it up again, the leftover air causes insufficient suction, so the machine can’t hold the cartons steadily. That’s why cartons jam or get fed crookedly.
To avoid this, pre-startup maintenance is a must. It’s best not to load materials right after turning on the machine. First, manually run the carton suction system 3-5 times to let the vacuum pump fully expel the residual air. Once the suction is stable and the carton suction movement is smooth, then start normal production with material loading. This simple step can effectively reduce waste cartons, letting the machine run smoothly as soon as it’s turned on — no more worrying about jams with the first batch.

Doing the vacuum suction test before startup seems like a small, insignificant action, but it can greatly improve production efficiency and reduce waste.
Has the carton erecting machine or cartoner in your factory ever had jamming problems with the first batch when starting up? How do you usually handle it?
